Champions League final venues

A club can make a final without hosting it. That single distinction explains many missed football geography guesses: the team name draws your eye, while the stadium decides the answer.

Barcelona, 1999: Manchester United against Bayern

United's late comeback is remembered in Manchester, but the 1999 final was at Camp Nou in Barcelona. Bayern Munich did not host it either. When two clubs from different countries meet in a final, look for the designated final venue rather than choosing either club's home ground. UEFA's final-venue history lists Camp Nou for 1998/99.

Istanbul, 2005: the comeback had a Turkish address

Liverpool came back against AC Milan in the 2005 final at Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul. Neither Liverpool nor Milan is the right city to tap. Istanbul is also geographically distinctive: it straddles the Bosporus between Europe and Asia. For a city-scale guess, identify Turkey and then the north-western corner near the strait. UEFA's Istanbul final report confirms the ground.

Munich, 2012: a rare home-city finalist

Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in the 2012 final at Football Arena Munich. Here Bayern's home city really was the final city, which makes the usual “neutral city” shortcut unreliable. The rule is not that finalists never play at home; it is that the venue must be checked independently. UEFA's venue list records Munich for 2011/12.

Lisbon twice, London again

Real Madrid's extra-time win over Atlético in 2014 was at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly called Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon. The same Lisbon ground hosted the 2020 final between Bayern and Paris Saint-Germain. A stadium's club association is not a clue to who played the final: Benfica hosted the venue, not those finalist teams. UEFA identifies both Lisbon finals.

The 2024 final returned to Wembley Stadium in London, where Real Madrid faced Borussia Dortmund. Wembley had also hosted Champions League finals in 2011 and 2013. Repeated host cities make a year essential: if you remember only “Wembley final”, you still need the teams or date to know which moment the clue means. UEFA's 2024 guide confirms the venue and earlier visits.

Before you tap

Keep three names separate: the home city of each finalist, the city of the final, and the ground inside that city. Only the last two determine the pin. Browse football grounds for more match locations, or use our clue-reading method in your next round.
